The summer is about to come, and the hot season of the jazz scene comes as well. This year, 2008 Taipei International Jazz season brings the well-claimed “Introduction to Jazz：A course of lectures” first, which comprises ten lectures to lead the music-lovers into the fruitful world of jazz. The lectures will be followed by the 5th Taipei international summer jazz academy, also known as TISJA 2008, more international jazz masters and Asia young musicians will
participate in the academy, bringing new stimulus to young jazz musicians in Taiwan.
“Introduction to Jazz：A course of lectures” is the first long term jazz appreciation lectures designed by famous Taiwanese jazz musicians Chipin & Kaiya. A complete 10 lectures summing up for 20 hours take the music-lovers to explore the jazz world from the origin of jazz to the vivid modern jazz and various styles comprising swing, bebop, cool, Latin and fusion. The lectures further guide the music-lovers to appreciate jazz song forms, instruments, orchestrations, improvisations and musicians. As jazz musicians themselves, Chi-pin Hsieh and Kai-ya Chang provide not only a professional view of jazz music, but also an interesting way to appreciate the beauty of jazz.
Besides the two professional lecturers, Taipei international jazz education and promotion association (TIJEPA), the organizer of “Introduction to Jazz：A course of lectures”, also invite different musicians, male and female singers to give live demonstrations during the lectures. Music-lovers can understand what happens during the performance of the music through the live demonstrations and get a clearer picture of jazz by listening and watching at the same time.
For the musicians who want to learn more, 2008 Taipei international summer jazz academy (TISJA) is your best choice! Taken place for 5 years, TISJA becomes an important jazz education event in Asia. Integrated with the international jazz faculties, various kinds of ensembles and well-organized lessons, all of these features of TISJA attract the young musicians from different places in ASIA. Each year, In the last week of July, these international jazz masters and young sensations from Europe, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea & Australia gather together in Shih-Chien University in Taipei to join the academy for one week and experience jazz for 24 hours each day!
Aside from an expecting larger scale of the academy for more basic students to join, the international jazz masters participated in the academy also increase to 11 well-known jazz musicians. Steve Davis, the faculty of Hartt School's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz and the member of Chick Corea's Origin Band, comes to join for the first time. Famous female trumpeter Saskia Laroo joins the academy for the second time and is ready to bring more powerful playing. John Ruocco, a well-acclaimed saxophonist and clarinetist, and David Milne, the chair of the Music Department of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, together provide their experience on woodwinds performance. Noted jazz singer & recording artist Denise Jannah from Netherlands will also give her singing experience sharing. Three faculties of Royal Conservatory Brussels - Fabien Degryse, Bart De Nolf and Thierry Gutmann, also the famous jazz musicians in Belgium, will bring along more interactions with the young musicians as previous years. Peter Van Marle further brings Latin music topics to the students and will lead more ensembles & rhythmic lessons. And Chi-pin Hsieh and Kai-ya Chang from Taiwan will integrate the piano, strings, ensembles & theory lessons to give the young musicians an even much more interesting academy. The fabulous learning experience will surely be unforgettable. Young musicians shouldn't miss such a great opportunity to approach jazz!
